This article examines the intensifying competition in Sub-Saharan Africa among Russia, China, and the United States to capture television audiences’ attention and advance their own geopolitical goals. Through surveys and interviews with African television executives, our findings show that they have a nuanced understanding of the competition to reach their viewers and are adroit at leveraging their gatekeeping position to meet local audiences’ demands.
